EMF attended Everrlence launch; maritime industry discusses decarbonization
Everllence, formerly MAN Energy Solutions, the company behind the engines in EMF’s three VLAC’s, announced the launch of its new ammonia dual-fuel engine in Copenhagen last week, marking a major step toward zero carbon propulsion in the maritime sector. EMF attended the event, which brought together industry professionals for discussions on decarbonization, with attendees participating in technical sessions on ammonia as a marine fuel, the business case for ammonia, and the development of the ME-LGIA engine. Everllence has begun taking orders, and the first engine is scheduled for yard delivery in 2026.
Ammonia as a future fuel
Ammonia is gaining traction as a viable zero carbon fuel for shipping. It produces no carbon when burned, has low SOx and particulate emissions and is carbon neutral when produced from green hydrogen. Its high energy density enables more compact storage, and it can be kept as a liquid at moderate pressure, making bunkering less complex than alternatives. While the outlook for ammonia in shipping is promising, the current lag in infrastructure investment means it remains a fuel for the future rather than a near-term solution.
EMF currently has three Very Large Ammonia Carriers on order, all with ammonia-ready design.
