Oman strategy set to increase VLAC demand

Oman strategy set to increase VLAC demand-EMF-Maritimefinance

Another huge boost for the future of green ammonia trading

Oman is positioning itself as a key exporter of renewable ammonia, with significant projects now underway. Through its national hydrogen strategy and agency Hydrom, Oman targets 5.6 million tons of renewable ammonia by 2030, and over 30 million tons by 2050. This shift will significantly increase long-haul ammonia trade, especially to Asia and Europe.

Long-term growth expected as a result of $140b outlay
Projects like SalalaH2 (1 million tons/year), backed by Marubeni, OQ, and Samsung, already have long-term offtake agreements in place. These volumes will be exported FOB or DAP from Salalah, requiring efficient and large-scale transportation solutions.

This structural shift is expected to boost demand for VLACs (Very Large Ammonia Carriers), ideally suited for these long-distance trades. With Oman committing over USD 140 billion to green hydrogen and ammonia, the VLAC segment is poised for strong, long-term growth.
