Strong performance data and early bunkering projects drive confidence
The transition to ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel is gaining traction, marked by the first green ammonia bunkering operation in China and plans for a new project in Singapore starting in 2027.
Ammonia engine tests show 95% emission cut
New findings from the Global Maritime Forum’s Getting to Zero Coalition suggest that ammonia could cut tank-to-wake emissions by 90 to 95% based on full-scale engine tests, surpassing earlier expectations. While initial adoption is expected to be gradual, this strengthens the case for shipowners who have invested in dual-fuel newbuilds with retrofit-ready engines. As the fuel supply chain develops and operational experience grows, these vessels are well positioned to capture the benefits of ammonia as a scalable decarbonisation pathway.
