Dual-fuel design underpins long-term competitiveness
Shipping executives expect adoption of alternative marine fuels to accelerate after 2030 as stricter emissions rules take effect. Green ammonia is emerging as a leading pathway to deep decarbonisation, and EMF’s vessels are being built with dual-fuel engines that can be converted to run on ammonia once the fuel becomes commercially viable, at a time when major industry players are also committing to only order dual-fuel ships. This approach provides the flexibility to meet future regulatory standards and secures long-term competitiveness.
Trump resistance slows momentum, does not alter direction
At the same time, the IMO’s carbon reduction targets face political resistance, with Donald Trump voicing strong opposition that has added uncertainty to the near-term pace of decarbonisation. Despite this volatility, long-term emission reduction remains a clear industry priority, and regulatory momentum is expected to drive alternative fuel uptake in the decade ahead.
