Successful bunkering demonstrations completed at nine locations
The global rollout of ammonia as a marine fuel took a major step forward this week with the publication of new data showing that twelve ammonia bunkering demonstrations have now been successfully completed across nine international locations. These trials included both truck-to-ship and ship-to-ship transfers, all conducted without incident.
Ship-to-ship transfers will soon be an operational reality
Ship-to-ship bunkering, where ammonia is transferred directly between vessels, is particularly significant as it enables offshore refuelling and reduces reliance on fixed port infrastructure. With the first dedicated ammonia bunker vessel now on order and port authorities beginning to establish regulatory frameworks, ammonia bunkering is transitioning from pilot phase to operational reality.
EMF’s ammonia fleet is designed for flexible bunkering
This progress is highly encouraging for the future conversion of dual-fuel LPG-ammonia vessels. EMF currently has 3 vessels under construction as Very Large Ammonia Carriers with engines designed for future possibility of ammonia retrofitting. As supply chains mature and global ports prepare to accommodate ammonia-fuelled vessels, the long-term investment case for scalable, low-emission shipping continues to strengthen.
